The Dog Who Swallowed Needles

Panicked at the very thought
That our boy might die,
We did what the doctor said.
We always do.  He said
Watch.  Just watch,
And soak cotton balls in milk.
Again, watch, as he chews
And swallows in sad gulps.
If everyone cooperates,
Your dog should be fine;
The needle from the sewing kit
Should simply pass through,
And end the adventure before
It has a chance to begin.
Everything passes.  Sooner
Or later, someone will be there,
Picking up the toys
That make companies rich:
The stuffed ducks; the fleeced
Lobsters, soft and dull
And so unlike the sharp
Jabs preceding whimpers.
