|Making Love Before Alleged Armageddon
I watch squirrels hiding their jewels in the gutter spout
outside the Walmart parking lot
where lovers in the back seat
celebrate the coming of the New Millennium.
I pass them thinking about a friend
though I'm told its better to forget
that for him the world already ended
last New Years without a sign of regret.
Stunned by car alarms and honking horns, I prepare
to enter the precarious traffic, wanting to believe no
matter what, those lovers would still be there.
I leave them as quietly as I came
hoping for them everything will be the same.
